Hokko Life is a cozy sim, and fishing is one of its coziest activities. Though fighting to reel in a difficult fish can be tricky, most of the time fishing is a relaxing endeavor, and it lets the player make a bit of money while unwinding, it’s a great activity for those that want to make some progress in the game while still taking it easy for a bit. Here’s everything the player needs to know to get started fishing in Hokko Life.

Fishing Basics

It’s pretty hard to fish without a fishing rod, so the first thing the player will need to do is get one. The player can get a Fishing Rod by talking to Derris the Bear. Derris can be found at the beach, but he isn’t in town for the first few days, so the player will need to wait a little while before they can start fishing. Derris will provide the player with the blueprint for a Fishing Rod and will also teach the player the basics of fishing. With the blueprint in hand, the player can go to their Crafting Bench and make the Fishing Rod using 3 Wooden Logs and 3 Grass Tufts.

Cozy games like this one often switch things up by including multiple fishing locations. There are three different places in which the player can fish in Hokko Life, and the player can catch different fish depending on the location: the River, the Sea, and the Pond. To further complicate things, time is a factor, so even if the player fishes in the same place five times, they might have wildly different results depending on what time it was. The day is divided into five different periods for the purpose of fishing: Morning (06-11), Lunch (11-14), Afternoon (14-17), Evening (17-20), and Night (20-06).

How To Fish

Once the player has their fishing rod equipped, they need to stand at the edge of the shore near a fish, which will be visible as a shadow in the water. Cast the line near the fish to attract its attention. If the fish ignores the line and swims away, simply move to another position and cast again, repeating this process until the fish goes for the line. The fish will then bite, and the lure will bob several times. Wait until the prompt appears, then press the Interaction Button to begin the reeling minigame.

A black bar will appear on the screen, and the player must now hold the left mouse button in order to begin reeling in the fish. Above it will be a second bar containing a picture of a fish, which will become important in a moment. When the fish in the top bar moves, the player will need to hold down the corresponding movement button (D when it instructs the player to Pull Right or A when it instructs the player to Pull Left, if the player is using the default WASD key bindings). Do this right, and it won’t be long before the player is back to befriending townspeople.

Though most of the game is relaxing, fishing does have its stressful moments. Sometimes, as the player reels, a shaky yellow border will surround the bottom bar. This is an indication for the player to ease up on reeling for a moment. If the player ignores this and continues to reel, the border will turn red, indicating that they have put too much tension on the line, and the fish will escape if the player does not let up. It’s therefore important that the player not be too aggressive while reeling, instead remaining patient and allowing the fish to dictate the rate at which the player reels.

Hokko Life is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
