Mandrakes play a key role in the plot of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. While the mandrake shrieks are enough to cause serious damage to the ears of any students who pull one out of its pot without proper safety equipment (and full-grown mandrake shrieks can be outright fatal), the plants serve important medicinal functions in the Wizarding World. After a loose basilisk petrifies various students in Chamber of Secrets, mandrakes are used to create the potion that heals them.

While Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets showcases how mandrakes can be used for healing, the Hogwarts Legacy video game shows how their shrieks can be used as a weapon. As explained in a recent tweet from the official Hogwarts Legacy Twitter account, mandrakes can be used to stun and harm enemies that are within the radius of its shriek. On paper, it sounds like the mandrakes are basically going to be the Hogwarts Legacy equivalent of stun grenades from other games.
When it comes to Hogwarts Legacy combat, it seems as though players will definitely have a lot of room for experimentation. Not only will magical plants like mandrakes be used in combat, but Hogwarts Legacy players will learn a variety of spells that they can dish out during duels as well. Casting spells will be the primary method players fight opponents in Hogwarts Legacy, but potions will also play a role.
Hogwarts Legacy lets players attend classes at Hogwarts where they learn new spells, potions, and more. While Harry Potter fans will have to play the game for themselves to know with certainty how this is all going to work, it sounds like they’re going to want to be sure to attend as many classes as possible if they want to maximize their potential in combat.
Of course, Hogwarts Legacy won’t be all about combat. Players will also be able to explore Hogwarts castle and the surrounding grounds, with iconic areas like Hogsmeade and the Forbidden Forest already confirmed for the game. Hype is high for Hogwarts Legacy, and it will be exciting to see if it manages to live up to expectations or not.
Hogwarts Legacy launches February 10 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X with PS4 and Xbox One versions coming April 4, and the Switch port releasing July 25.
