Mel Brooks has long been a staple of American comedy, with the Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein director routinely classed amongst the best there ever was. He’s also been on a roll of late, from his musical version of The Producers to the upcoming Hulu series History of the World, Part 2, a sequel series to his 1981 comedic romp through world history.
History of the World, Part 2 aims for an equally hilarious angle. Photos show Barinholtz playing Leon Trotsky, the famed Russian military leader who slowly lost power after Lenin died in 1924 and Joseph Stalin came into power. Kroll plays a fictitious character named Schmuck Mudman (Schmuck is a Yiddish term for a man’s genitalia), looking for all the world, like Seth Rogen’s character in An American Pickle. Sykes plays Shirley Chisholm, who became the first African American woman elected to the United States Congress in 1968. There is also a photo of the three of them together at what looks like a hockey rink, possibly for the 1980 Olympics “Miracle on Ice” match.
The 1981 movie, History of the World, Part I, saw Brooks star in five different roles, including Moses, Comicus the Stand-Up Philosopher, Torquemada, Louis XVI, and Jacques. Some of the roles were either based on actual historical figures or send-ups of events of the eras depicted. It’s the type of comedy that other series would try to emulate, such as the popular Drunk History, in which a slew of celebrities, three sheets to the wind, try to talk about actual historical events without rambling (or puking).
Brooks is an executive producer and writer on History of the World, Part 2, which, like the movie it continues, will remain an anthology and have multiple historical events depicted in each episode. Historical events scheduled for the series include the building of the pyramids, the US Civil War, the Russian Revolution, Kublai Khan and Shakespeare’s writer’s room, amongst others exploited for their comedic potential. Barinholtz, Sykes, and Kroll produce as well, and the series is set to see appearances from D’Arcy Carden, Rogen, Rob Corddry, JB Smoove, and many more.
There’s currently no release date for History of the World, Part 2.
